Father Danilo has met Fr. Abel, Cecile, Boniface and Serge in the Diocese of Nkayi. They are witnesses from this forsaken land who are asking our help.
Fr. Abel
Is a priest of the Diocese of Nkayi. He has accompanied Fr. Danilo on his trip. His is the first voice which informs him about this forsaken land, about its sufferings and dying people.
Fr. Abel was lucky, life gave him the chance to live and study in Europe. He has travelled, and this knowledge enables him to determine what is best for his people.
He shares in his people’s poverty. With dignity he shows us what life is like in rundown houses with no running water and no furniture. Yet his radiant smile and unshakable faith never leave him.
Cecile and Simone
Cecile is a 3-year-old child suffering from malaria. Lying on a bed, she is accompanied by her mother, Simone, whose face and gaze reveal sadness and hopelessness. Simone is a widow.
Her husband is a victim of the civil war. A few words of comfort and a prayer is all we can do for her at the moment.
Cecile, along with so many other children, has fallen ill because of an overall lack of hygiene.
Boniface
Is a retired medical doctor who has experienced first-hand all the tragedies that have befallen his country. He is a wise and gentle man who firmly believes in solidarity and generosity, and that things can change for the better.
Serge
Is Fr. Abel’s young assistant. A former soldier, he has lived through harrowing experiences: one day at university a band of soldiers burst into the campus, capturing and beating everyone.
He escaped death by fleeing into the forests, wading through hundreds of lifeless corpses. He has seen women being raped, boys butchered.
Despite this, he still believes in change. Starting from the arrival of drinkable water.
